Benefits of Farming with Penrith Farms

Penrith Farms is a Young Adult Program settled on 320 acres of timber and farmland in Eastern Washington. Penrith Farms began as a foster care service for the State of Washington in 1983 but over the years evolved into a community where young men and young women make the transition from their teenage years to adulthood. At Penrith Farms, young adults are integrated into a community devoted to personal commitment, communication, and self-discovery where they will learn the value of work, honesty, trust, and respect.

At Penrith Farms we strive to give young adults the confidence needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive society. Confidence is acquired through the development of self-worth, work ethics, and interpersonal communication skills. With confidence young adults will be better equipped to manage their own affairs and, in the end, become productive self-motivating responsible members of society.
We employ a positive peer culture in which members are responsible for encouraging each other to succeed and be accountable for words and actions. A positive peer culture creates a foundation for developing personal responsibility and essential leadership skills through appropriate role modeling. Our work venues, music instruction, and horsemanship programs offer additional opportunities for students to cultivate effective communication skills and emotional outlets.

We offer a dynamic organic structure that constantly changes as the composition of the community changes, whether it be staff or client. The advantage this offers is due to the constant evolution of responses to varying circumstances thus creating an environment where adaptation becomes a learning process. The environment that Penrith Farms creates is an accurate model of the “World at Large” without the harsh consequences involved with inappropriate conduct. This model affords clients the opportunity to learn from mistakes.

Our diverse nature also provides us the ability to connect with each member from a realistic, spontaneous, and honest perspective. This connection develops a relationship based on trust which is a major consideration for any constructive mentoring; without it, mentoring becomes nothing more than a word game where core issues are not revealed. At Penrith Farms we do not focus on symptoms but use spontaneity and trust to uncover the root of issues that lead to unproductive behavior.

Penrith Farms provides an extremely flexible structure that allows us to tailor curriculum and mentoring to the needs of each individual without compromising the integrity of our evolving community. Our structure and experience enables us to apply a variety of creative techniques in addressing any individual’s challenges; where daily opportunities assist students in understanding the outcomes of their choices. Through this entire process, students learn skills that help them understand and change non-productive behavior.
